For 25 years, Katmex have been a powerful force in the heavy equipment manufacturing industry, building a reputation for precision, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to its North East roots. As the company marks this milestone anniversary in 2024, it is not only reflecting on past achievements but also laying the groundwork for a future focused on sustainability, growth, and excellence across a broad range of sectors.

Building a Legacy of Quality

Founded in 1999 through a visionary partnership between Katsushiro Matex, KEISA, and Mitsubishi, Katmex began with a clear mission: to supply high-quality steel parts and precision fabrications for the construction and earthmoving sectors. Initially operating from a facility in Stockton and later adding another in Seaham, County Durham, Katmex quickly established itself as a trusted supplier, known for delivering exceptional quality parts for the industry.

Over the years, Katmex has gained momentum and began supplying components to several JCB divisions in 2008 and expanded its partnership with Komatsu through commencement of supply to its Construction division in Germany during 2010, as well as more locally commencing supply of precision components to Caterpillar’s articulated truck plant in Peterlee, County Durham. These collaborations cemented Katmex’s reputation for quality, leading to the company being named Komatsu UK’s Supplier of the Year three times. Most recently, in 2023, Katmex was honoured at the Komatsu Global Midori Kai Event as one of only eight global suppliers to receive the prestigious Grand Partner Award. Bringing this award back to Tees Valley was a proud moment, recognising the dedication of the team at Katmex to deliver excellence on a global scale.

Investing for the Long Run

In the past decade, Katmex has invested heavily to ensure its operations remain efficient, sustainable, and ready for future challenges. More than £2.6 million has been allocated to infrastructure upgrades and technological advancements. A highlight of these improvements was the £1.4 million project to replace the roof and cladding at its expansive 25,000m2 Stockton facility. This new design is not only visually striking but also incorporates 10% skylighting, enhancing both natural light and energy efficiency.

Looking further ahead, Katmex is exploring solar power options to support its Net Zero ambitions. These projects reflect a forward-thinking approach, balancing environmental responsibility with operational efficiency.

Katmex’s investment strategy extends well beyond infrastructure. The company recently added two Hurco VMX64 CNC machines to its manufacturing lineup at Stockton site, following a recent investment in Hurco machines at its Seaham site, enhancing precision and consistency across its processes. With 17 CNC machines now in operation. Katmex has also embraced automation, including a collaborative robot (cobot) that has transformed its welding processes, increasing both output and quality, with further automation plans in the offing.

Developing Tomorrow’s Talent

Katmex recognises that its greatest asset is its people. With a robust apprenticeship programme in place, the company welcomed eight new apprentices in 2024 alone. These newcomers undergo a comprehensive six-week induction, rotating through various departments to gain a holistic understanding of the business.

The programme is already yielding impressive results. Nathan Wall, a former apprentice who is now a production engineer, was named Future Leader at the 2024 Tees Business Awards. Nathan’s journey at Katmex exemplifies the company’s commitment to nurturing talent and supporting employees’ career growth. “I’ve mentored a young team of apprentices and technicians,” Nathan reflects, “and it’s inspiring to see them grow within the company. They’re the future, and I want to give them the best opportunities to succeed.”

Katmex Managing Director Lee Cranston echoes this sentiment: “We’ve always brought apprentices into the business, especially in engineering, but we’re also looking at how training can benefit everyone. People are assets just like our buildings and machines, and it’s crucial to invest in their growth.”

Facing New Challenges with Confidence

As Katmex celebrates its silver anniversary, the company is as focused on the future as it is on past successes. Environmental responsibility has become a central goal, with plans to further reduce its environmental footprint. Beyond the solar panel initiative, Katmex is exploring automation and digital technologies to enhance energy efficiency and minimise waste.

Diversifying its client base is another key priority. While construction and earthmoving remain core industries, Katmex is broadening its reach to ensure resilience amid a changing market.

Innovation, Partnerships, and a Vision for the Future

Katmex’s 25-year journey has been a testament to innovation, partnership, and a commitment to shaping the industrial landscape of Tees Valley and beyond. From its beginnings to its current status as a manufacturing powerhouse, Katmex has continually evolved, embracing new technologies and nurturing the people who drive its success.

“People are the backbone of our business,” Lee emphasises. “We’re expanding our training programmes to reach all employees, not just specific departments. By investing in their growth, we’re investing in the future of Katmex.”

As it moves forward, Katmex is well-positioned to thrive, building on a legacy of quality, sustainability, and workforce development. With a clear vision, strong partnerships, and a commitment to innovation, Katmex’s impact on the manufacturing world—and on the community it calls home—will continue for many years to come.
