Barnard Castle-based S&A Fabrications Ltd are celebrating national recognition after winning the Livestock Building of the Year Award at the prestigious RIDBA Building Awards 2025.

The award was presented for S&A’s innovative work on the Kynren Aviary Project near Bishop Auckland, where the company adapted three of its signature Roundhouses—normally used for cattle housing—to create a purpose-built home for birds of prey.

The project saw the familiar circular structures redesigned with divided sections, handling areas, and even ponds in some enclosures, enabling the Kynren team to care for the birds safely and efficiently. Painted exteriors and timber interiors gave the buildings a theatrical finish that blends into the spectacular setting of Kynren’s open-air live shows.

The award was collected on behalf of the company by Lynn and Simon Pelly, against the remarkable backdrop of Concorde at the Concorde Conference Centre in Manchester, where the ceremony was held.

S&A said:

“We’re incredibly proud to bring this award back to Barnard Castle. The Kynren project pushed us to think differently about what our Roundhouses can do, and it shows the versatility of rural buildings beyond their traditional uses. Most importantly, this is recognition of the hard work of our local team and the subcontractors who helped us deliver the project on time and on budget.”

Founded and based in Barnard Castle, S&A Fabrications have built a strong reputation in the region and across the UK for high-quality agricultural and rural buildings and more recently the production of new Hangars at Teesside Airport. Winning this award shines a national spotlight on the expertise rooted in Teesdale.
