What does 45 years of craftsmanship look like?
It looks like this.
A first-year apprentice standing beside the company’s very first apprentice from 1980, now Technical & Estimating Manager, sharing knowledge, experience and a passion for doing things properly.
In an industry driven by deadlines, technology, and cost pressures, it’s easy to forget what truly builds a great fabrication company. It isn’t just machinery. It isn’t just capability. It’s people.
At Aycliffe Fabrications, people have always been, and always will be, our greatest investment.
Meet Joe, our newest apprentice, pictured alongside Colin, who began his own apprenticeship journey with us 46 years ago. Colin now leads our technical and estimating department, but his foundation was built on the shop floor – learning traditional fabrication skills that still form the backbone of our business today.
That continuity matters.
Colin works closely with Joe every day, passing on decades of experience, problem-solving instinct and practical craftsmanship. It’s not just about teaching someone how to weld, measure or fabricate. It’s about teaching standards. Pride. Accountability. The importance of getting it right first time.
While our workshop today is equipped with modern CNC machinery and advanced equipment, the core principles remain unchanged. Traditional sheet metalworking skills sit alongside new technology, ensuring we deliver accuracy, consistency and quality on every project.
Joe joined us through South West Durham Training and has already demonstrated exceptional ability, attitude and workmanship. For a first-year apprentice, his progress has been outstanding. Not just technically, but professionally. He asks questions. He listens. He applies what he learns. And that mindset is exactly what turns apprentices into tradesmen.
We’re incredibly proud that Joe has been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year at the Made in the North East Awards. It’s a remarkable achievement at such an early stage in his career and a reflection of both his commitment and the strength of the apprenticeship pathway.
Apprenticeships are not just about filling roles. They are about safeguarding skills for the future of British manufacturing. They ensure knowledge isn’t lost. They create opportunity. They strengthen local industry.
For us, this is more than an award nomination. It represents 45 years of continuous investment in people, from Colin in 1980 to Joe in 2025, and a clear commitment to the next generation of skilled fabricators.
The photograph captures more than two colleagues. It captures legacy, mentorship and the future of fabrication under one roof.
Because while machines evolve and projects vary, one thing remains constant at Aycliffe Fabrications:
We build more than metal.
We build people.
