The 23-year-old Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician apprentice from Gateshead received the esteemed City & Guilds Livery Company Prize for 2025. The Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers of the City of London presented the award during a ceremony at Mansion House.
Matthew’s path to engineering was unconventional. After five years in retail post-Lord Lawson Academy, his passion for understanding and fixing led him to Hartlepool College’s mechatronics apprenticeship with Gestamp Tallent in Newton Aycliffe. Now in his third year, Matthew consistently excels academically and in practical applications. He has completed additional courses, including a Higher National Certificate in Engineering, and has undertaken extra responsibilities at Gestamp Tallent.
