What do you do?

BTS Facades and Fabrications trading as BTS Fabrications Limited is a manufacturing business which produces high-quality façade products, flashings and bespoke metal products. Its state-of-the-art automated facility in Newton Aycliffe proudly showcases the company’s products; it now has an estimated turnover of £9.5 million.

What makes BTS Fabrications great?

BTS has moved to a ‘stakeholder business model’, which focuses on social and environmental concerns as well as profits. The business is working towards B Corp certification, a recognised standard of excellence in performance, accountability and transparency.

In the past 12 months, BTS’ have set standards in world-class manufacturing excellence, automation, innovation, renowned quality, carbon neutrality and its accelerated net zero ambitions.

BTS’ culture is very important to the team, this has resulted in excellent employee attraction and retention.

The company has a fully transparent profit share scheme and will be introducing employee share schemes to elevate its stakeholder business model and reduce tax bills.

BTS’ Vantage® products are undergoing life-cycle assessments leading to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to allow it to communicate its embodied carbon in its rainscreen systems. This is a key objective so the construction industry can work to decarbonise buildings. This is an important issue for architects and once BTS’ product embodied carbon is added to our RIBA CPD and portfolio, the company will again, set the standards.

What is your 5 year plan?

BTS will grow to at least 15 million turnover with increased profits. The team aims to stand out leaders in the facade sector and great ambassadors for the North East.

As part of ongoing aspirations for B Corp and using the stakeholder model identity, BTS would like to become employee owned through an EOT or a EBT.

The team will continue with LEAN processes that contribute towards the success of the company, but also, ensures its employees are engaged, coached, trained and have direction.

BTS is socially and environmentally responsible in their business operations and commit to focusing as much on social, environmental and community concerns as they do on profits. A great example of this is when 11 team members enrolled for the Great North Run to raise funds for the Great North Air Ambulance Service, the company’s chosen charity.

What are you looking for from your EMN membership?

Networking and learning from similar like-minded companies. We want to be world class and keep improving and there will definitely be opportunities to learn from other members.

What information do you want to get out to members?

The team would like to help fellow members learn and develop their sustainability and Net Zero ambitions. We could also help any members with lean and employee engagement that we have very well engrained into our culture.

What are you going to offer back to the community?

We want to talk to them about our journey on our stakeholder business model / B Corp / ESG and our 4-day working week. We have written a Riba approved CPD on Sustaianability and would be happy to present it.
