In our latest Spotlight On feature, Leanne Fawcett chats to Gary Breach, managing director of NECS Cleaning, the Cramlington-based commercial cleaning company which was established by Gary in 2006.

Here he tells us more about the company’s growth and its plans for the future.

Tell us about the journey the business has been on since you launched it in 2006.

I worked for a large commercial cleaning company for several years before I decided to launch my own business, North East Cleaning Services, in 2006.

Initially our client base was in the leisure and retail sectors, including bars, restaurants, hotels and car showrooms.

We grew very quickly but then 2008 happened and things became very tough for us.

We decided to re-focus on the office and industrial sectors, but work wasn’t a given, we had to network to get it rather than it being a done deal.

And what about now?

Office and industrial remain core sectors for us, but we also manage contracts for companies within the education, healthcare and retail sectors.

We employ around 250 people who manage contracts from the southern Midlands and up into Scotland, and although the bulk of our work is regional, we can deliver contracts anywhere provided it makes business sense to do so.

What are your plans for 2019?

To continue to grow. As a business we’re making quite a lot of technological advances which we hope will put us in a stronger position to win work. We’re also looking to digitise a lot of our processes which again, we think will add to our competitiveness.

You’re also a member of CDEMN. What do you hope to get from that?

As we have been ISO accredited for a number of years, we have been working with consultants who recently suggested we speak to Ben at CDEMN, as they thought the network would be a good support for us. We’re also very keen on networking and raising our profile as far and wide as possible, and we think CDEMN will help us achieve that.
