Develop stronger senior leaders with Durham University Business School

Senior leaders across the North East are operating in an increasingly complex business environment. From technological change and growing commercial pressures to developing people, managing finances and delivering long-term strategy, leadership teams are being asked to make better decisions, faster.

Durham University Business School’s Senior Leader Accelerator has been designed to help experienced and emerging senior leaders build the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to respond to those challenges.

The programme brings together four areas that are increasingly important for anyone moving into, or already operating at, senior leadership level:

  • Leadership
  • Strategy
  • Finance for Non-Financial Managers
  • Technology in Business

Each module is delivered over three days, giving participants 12 days of face-to-face learning across the complete Senior Leader Accelerator programme.

Throughout the programme, participants explore current academic thinking alongside practical tools, frameworks and real-world business applications that can be taken back into their organisations.

Leadership development backed by executive coaching

A key part of the Senior Leader Accelerator is its integrated executive coaching.

Participants receive four one-to-one coaching sessions during the programme, providing dedicated time to reflect on their own leadership challenges, put learning into practice and concentrate on individual development priorities.

This combination of structured learning and individual coaching is intended to help participants move beyond simply understanding leadership concepts and consider how they can apply them within their own role and organisation.

Flexible learning for busy senior leaders

Recognising the demands on senior managers, the Senior Leader Accelerator has been designed to offer greater flexibility.

Rather than having a single annual starting point, participants can join the programme at any of the four modules and complete the remaining modules as they run subsequently.

For employers, this means leadership development can begin when it is needed, rather than having to wait for the start of a new annual cohort.

Supporting leaders in engineering and manufacturing

For businesses across the engineering and manufacturing sector, the breadth of the Senior Leader Accelerator is particularly relevant.

Senior leaders can find themselves balancing immediate operational pressures with longer-term business strategy, while also responding to AI and digital transformation, developing their teams, managing increasingly commercial customer and supplier relationships, and taking on greater financial responsibility.

The programme provides an opportunity to step away from those day-to-day pressures, look at the bigger picture and strengthen leadership capability across several interconnected areas of the business.

For emerging leaders, it can also help build broader commercial and strategic knowledge as their responsibilities increase.
